solo, collective and mult-lingual recitations from memory of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Act 36: To Reverse the Usual Order of Things

a recitation placing Sign Language at the centre of communication

Monica Ross and Signer Co-Recitors

Anniversary — an act of memory is a multi-lingual performance series focused on the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which the UN has translated into over 380 spoken languages, though not yet BSL or any other sign language.

The European Commission of Languages estimates around half a million people in the EU use a national sign language as a first language, and many more as a second or third language.

Reversing the usual order of things, and making visible these often unseen languages, this performance presents a collective recitation primarily in sign languages with a text translation for the hearing audience.
